The airport was formerly known as Mikra Airport and is the largest state-owned airport in Greece. The passenger traffic at the airport was nearly four million in 2010. A hub for Astra Airlines and a secondary hub for Aegean Airlines and Olympic Air, aircraft movement at the airport were 43,430 in 2011.
